Sechelt Innovations, organics pick-up on agenda for first Finance, Culture and Economic Development meeting

It looks like Sechelt’s new mayor and Council are leaning toward keeping Sechelt Innovations Limited, the controversial business development corporation set up by the previous administration.

SIL presented its 3rd quarter financial report for Councillors on Monday.

Mayor Bruce Milne, however, says before giving it a new mandate, they need a better picture of what the District is getting for the hundreds of thousands of dollars that’s gone into SIL.  He says perceptions of SIL may have been clouded by unrealistic expectations.

Also at the Monday committee meeting, Councillors OK’d taking bids on expanding a test program for kitchen scrap and organic waste pick-up.

They’re setting a loose target of April to expand the program District-wide, depending on the results of the bids from interested companies.

Councillor Alice Lutes has been making the case for including multifamily buildings, like condos.

Lutes was able to convince Council to ask companies that bid whether they’d consider multifamily buildings, and what that would cost.

In the meantime, the pilot project running in the Davis Bay area will continue.
