Nanaimo fire displaces one person

Emergency social services had to find accommodation for a displaced resident following a fire overnight (Sun-Mon).
The fire, on Strickland Street in Nanaimo, caused damage to the lower suite’s kitchen area.
There were no injuries.
The fire is currently under investigation by Nanaimo Fire Rescue.
When crews arrived, there was no evidence of a working smoke alarm.
Karen Fry, with Nanaimo Fire Rescue says had there been a working smoke alarm the resident may have been alerted to the fire earlier and damage may have been mitigated.
Fry says only 27 per cent of residential fires in Nanaimo are found to have a working smoke alarm.
