Serious accidents in both Nanaimo and the Sunshine Coast while fire displaces 18

Two teenagers were struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the Island Highway at Mostar Road Friday night.

RCMP say the 15 year girl and 17 year old boy were both critically injured and were taken to hospital following the incident that happened around 10:30.

The driver, a 56 year old man, remained and the scene and cooperated with police.

Police say it appears the two injured youth were with two others and were attempting to run/walk across the crosswalk against the red light.

Drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors.

At the time of the accident, the roads were wet and slippery.

Both students were foreign exchange students enrolled in the Nanaimo/Ladysmith School District.

In the meantime, there was an accident in Wilson Creek on the Sunshine Coast Saturday morning.

Highway 101 was closed for a number of hours.

There’s no word yet on what, exactly happened, nor whether or not there were injuries.

Fire crews were called to a fire in the downtown area of Nanaimo around ten to one Saturday morning.

When crews arrived they found one suite, in the five unit residential building, fully involved in flames.

Firefighters did manage to contain the blaze to the one suite, but there was heavy smoke damage in the other suites and no power.

All 18 residents escaped from the building but one did suffer from some burns.

The occupants have been relocated to temporary accommodations.

An investigation into the fire is underway.
