Some south coast ski hills are open, but Dakota Ridge awaits more snow

Ski hills on the North Shore and in Whistler have opened early, but for fans of the Sunshine Coast’s Dakota Ridge the wait continues.

Sam Adams is a parks planner for the Sunshine Coast Regional District, which operates Dakota Ridge.

He says there’s a “skiff” of snow right now, and they’re hoping for enough to open in mid-December.

Adams also says, thanks to a boost from the province, and donated work from local contractor Daryl Lewis, they were able to improve the trails in the off-season.

“We were able to install some culverts on one of our trails to reduce the water flow there, and make it so that we’re able to operate under less-than-great conditions,” he says. “Which seems to be the norm these days.”

Adams adds they’re hoping for enough snow that visitors can take full advantage of some new trails that didn’t open very often last season.

Because of last season’s disappointing conditions, Dakota Ridge will be honouring season passes from last year.
