Island Health is trying out a pilot project that it hopes will reduce infant mortality rates.
Right now infant mortality on the Island is slightly higher than the Canadian average.
Dr. Paul Hasselback says the Baby Bed Initiative in the Cowichan Valley aims to promote safe sleep for babies, and reduce sudden infant death, by giving new moms a special bed kit.
Hasselback says they’ve been supplying the kits since May 1st.
We also caught up with a few new and expecting moms taking part in the program.

The Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island gave Island Health 50 thousand dollars for the project, and if it’s a success it will go Island-wide.
