Smoke from wildfires could pose a risk, say local MHOs

There’s a Wildfire Smoke Advisory in effect for the Sunshine Coast and the east and south coast of Vancouver Island.

Dr Paul Martiquet is the Medical Health Officer for the Sunshine Coast. He says people with underlying medical conditions should lay low.

Dr Charmaine Enns with Island Health says infants and seniors should also avoid exposure. She says the air quality in Nanaimo right now constitutes a moderate health risk.

There are 180 wildfires burning across BC.

The Old Sechelt Mine fire west of Sechelt is now mapped at 150 hectares. Crews have it 40% contained and evacuation alerts remain in place for Carlson Point.

The Dog Mountain fire on Sproat Lake is estimated at 96 hectares and one abandoned cabin has burnt down.

Near Port Hardy, there’s a 16 hectare fire that’s 20% contained.

The Boulder Creek fire near Pemberton has swelled to nearly 5000 hectares and it’s growing rapidly.

The Elaho Fire is 20,000 hectares.
