UPDATE 9:30 pm: Wildfires burning near Nanaimo and Sechelt

UPDATE:

Sechelt Fire remains at roughly 2 hectares.  District of Sechelt says it is not threatening structures.  RCMP confirm there are no evacuation orders/alerts, however RCM SAR volunteers have been visiting the water access only properties in the Carlson Point area to advise the residents to be ready in case the situation changes.  Wind shifts in the late evening have led to reports of smoke and ash as far away as Gibsons.

Fire was person caused

In Cedar,  12 homes in the area of Cedar Rd, Yellowpoint Road and Adshead road have been evacuated.  The North Oyster VFD says that fire has now grown to 2o hectares.  It was apparently sparked by hay mowing equipment.

The Town of Ladysmith has activated its Emergency Operations Centre to provide support and assistance as required.

Fires crews are expected to be at both scenes through the night.

ORIGINAL STORY There are wildfires burning near Nanaimo and Sechelt.

The Coastal Fire Centre says there’s a fire burning in West Sechelt in the Mason Rd area. It has now grown to between 1.5 and 2 hectares in size.

There’s also a wildfire south of Nanaimo near the intersection of Cedar Rd and Hill Rd. It’s reported to be 4 hectares in size. Cedar, Cranberry, Ladysmith and North Oyster fire crews are responding. The Coastal Fire Center has sent an initial attack crew and air tankers to tackle the blaze.

Some homes along the west side of Cedar Road between Yellow Point and Adshead Road are being evacuated.
