Seniors Advocate visits Sechelt for housing forum following major recommendations

Isobel Mackenzie’s latest report says the province should be doing more to ensure older British Columbians have housing that’s “affordable, appropriate and available”.

Speaking at a weekend housing forum in Sechelt, Mackenzie pointed out availability is often the biggest issue in smaller centres.

She says local governments have a tool they can use to help with the availability part – zoning:

Mackenzie says in areas like the Sunshine Coast a lot of seniors own their homes, and are mortgage free.

She’s suggesting a government program to help make it easier for those people to keep up with maintenance costs while on a fixed income; by using their equity.
