Gibsons finalizing details of affordable housing agreements

The Town of Gibsons has been trying to get more affordable housing by negotiating with developers to designate units in their projects.

Now, Council is finalizing price points and ownership criteria for units in the Parkland Subdivision, Soames Place and a project on Park Road.

The next step would be to go out to look for potential buyers.

But Mayor Wayne Rowe is also signalling a change in the Town’s approach to affordable housing might be in the offing.

That change would likely be a shift from commitments for affordable units from developers to cash contributions, with the money used for things like the Sunshine Coast Housing Committee’s proposed community land trust.

At this week’s meeting the Housing Committee’s Matt Thomson told Councillors they’ll be coming to local governments with more details on the proposal in the New Year, now that there’s been a general show of support.
