Baxter, Rae named school board chairs

Betty Baxter will continue as Chair of the Sunshine Coast School Board.

Baxter was acclaimed at Tuesday night’s inaugural meeting along with vice Chair Lori Pratt.

Baxter says she’s eager to apply some of the lessons learned in her first year as Chair – especially when it comes to getting input from the community.

Baxter says she’d also like to see work continue on a facilities sharing agreement with the Sunshine Coast Regional District and she remains open to the idea of discussing changes to the Board itself, such as reducing the number of Trustees, if there seems to be public interest.

And in Nanaimo – Ladysmith, a prominent voice in the Save Cedar Schools fight is now the Chair of the  School Board.

Steve Rae, a first time trustee, was chosen at this week’s inaugural meeting. Another Save Cedar Schools advocate, Stephanie Higginson will be the vice Chair.

But Rae says they were elected to represent the entire district and won’t fixate on one issue.

Rae says the board needs to work on re-establishing relationships with key stakeholders, as they consider SD 68’s priorities for the next four years.
