Wildsafe BC getting results on Sunshine Coast

Wildsafe BC‘s coordinator for the Sunshine Coast says the program is working well, but it could work better if there was money to keep it going through most of the year.

The money comes from local governments, private sponsors and the province and it typically lasts from late spring to late November.

In her end of season report for the Sunshine Coast Regional District Coordinator Kim Drescher said that’s sometimes when things are just getting busy, especially with bears.

WildSafe took over from the old Bear Aware a couple of years ago.  It now aims to educate people on avoiding conflicts with all wildlife, not just bears.

And Drescher says the program’s effectiveness is showing up in the call numbers from the Conservation Officer Service, which are down since January of 2014.
