Nanaimo Council moves ahead with big grant for Loaves and Fishes

A $275,000 grant from the City of Nanaimo means a new warehouse is now within reach for the Nanaimo’s Loaves and Fishes Food Bank.

The grant will be paid out over two years, and give the food bank the borrowing power it needs to buy a building on Fry St. by the December 31st deadline.

Councillor Jerry Hong, though, says he’s a little worried about future costs associated with buying an old building.

Loaves and Fishes says the larger warehouse will enable the food bank to expand their food recovery program, adding as many as 10 new grocery stores, and give their 3,000 monthly clients the option to pick and choose what they need from stocked shelves.
