Weston says loss of fisheries officers a necessary "sacrifice" to help balance budget

The lower Sunshine Coast is losing its only two fisheries officers as of April 1st.

The Madeira Park field office is the victim of budget cuts, which will see the Department of Fisheries and Oceans reassign the officers.

West Vancouver, Sunshine Coast and Sea to Sky MP John Weston sits on the Fisheries Committee.  He says there’s no doubt fishing, especially recreational fishing, is growing again in terms of economic activity in the area, but balancing the budget leaves little choice.

Weston made the comments on Coast TV’s Parliamentary Talk Back.

DFO, for its part, says reassigning the officers will not create a “gap” in coverage as the area will still be served by Powell River and Nanaimo.
