Man rescued from Haslam Creek

A man swept out of his Jeep yesterday in Haslam Creek was plucked out of the water about 1km downstream. The 30-year-old called 911 on Sunday, January 12, just before 3:30pm, after his car got stuck and took on water while he was four-by-fouring in the area.

Ladysmith RCMP, along with Nanaimo RCMP, Nanaimo Search and Rescue, the Cedar and Cranberry Fire Departments responded. They found him in the creek and he was taken to Ladysmith Hospital. He was treated for hypothermia and other non-life threatening injuries, and released later that day.

People are being reminded to be careful around rivers and creek swollen by rain, where strong undercurrents can be deadly.
