BC Ferries debate prompts revival of bridge talk

All the debate over BC Ferries possibly dropping the Nanaimo – Horseshoe Bay route, fuel surcharges, and high fares has one man trying to revive the idea of building a fixed link between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

Martin Zylstra started the Twitter account: “Bridge to Van Isle” to kick off the discussion.

Zylstra says he thinks the idea is building momentum, albeit slowly, and given that the last feasibility study on a fixed link was back in the 1980s, it’s time for a new one.

The province is studying a link between Gabriola Island and the main Island, but that’s as far as they’re taking the bridge idea right now.

There was also a similar effort to re-invigorate the idea of a bridge to the Sunshine Coast over the summer.
