Ferry ridership hits new low

Ferry Advisory Committees on the Coast have been tracking ferry ridership stats for years, but the latest number crunching from the chair of the Southern Gulf Islands Ferry Advisory Committee is getting a lot of attention.

October saw a 3 per cent overall drop from 2013, with some smaller routes seeing passenger and vehicle numbers go down 10 per cent.

Brian Hollingshead says that’s just the latest in a long series of declines that now have traffic at its lowest level since 1991, and it’s all because of high fares.

Hollingshead says the trend goes back to shortly after the government changed BC Ferries into a quasi-private company, and the only boost in ridership came in 2010 because of the Olympics.
