Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club hoping to send 2 blind bowlers to International Championships

Two blind lawn bowlers from Nanaimo are hoping to attend the International Blind Lawn Bowlers Championships in New Zealand.

Randy Fred and Dave Ruckman qualified in September by winning Canadian Championship medals in their respective categories. Fred is totally blind, while Ruckman is visually impaired.

The Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club has launched the “Journey Down Under” fundraising campaign to raise the $20,000 needed to send Fred, Ruckman and their Directors to the competition. Fred says having a Director standing by is crucial for blind lawn bowlers.

Ruckman says he and Fred are excited about the prospect of competing in the International Championship and they’re already getting support from other bowlers on Vancouver Island.

Nanaimo has the largest visually-impaired lawn bowling program in Canada. President David Mitchell says it would mean a lot to the Club to be able to send Fred and Ruckman to the high-profile competition.

There are 71 days left in the online fundraising campaign. The Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club is also hosting and a Beer & Burger event on Dec 6 at the Wellington Pub from 4-8pm to support the cause.
