SCRD committee backs Transit Future Plan

Directors at the Sunshine Coast Regional District are poised to approve a long-term plan for transit expansion.

The 25 Year Transit Future Plan was recently OK’d at Committee and the next step is final approval by the SCRD Board.  It also needs a final nod from BC Transit.

The Future Plan calls for some so-called “quick win” changes that won’t drive up costs, like adjusting routes in West Sechelt to allow for service to the Botanical Garden.

It also calls for adding new buses in within three years, and Rebecca Newlove of BC Transit says that is going to mean more money.

The new buses will allow a shift by the end of year 3 to an express route on Highway 101 linking Sechelt and the Langdale Ferry Terminal, and feeder routes to serve areas like Roberts Creek, Elphinstone and Lower Gibsons.

West Howe Sound’s Lee Turnbull, however, says she’s worried splitting up the route will mean worse, not better, service for people in those “feeder” areas.
