Nanaimo Council could vote to close loophole in med. marijuana zoning

Nanaimo City Council could change its stance on medical marijuana production, after already approving a rezoning to allow a commercial grow op on Maughan Road.

Last July, councillors voted in favour of letting medical marijuana growers set up shop on industrial or agricultural land.  But then they discovered grow ops on industrial land could get a huge tax break by applying to be assessed as “farm use”.

A bylaw amendment coming up at Monday”s Council meeting would close that potential loophole by restricting future commercial grow ops to agricultural land only.
