Election 2014: Nanaimo – McKay wins Mayoralty

After one term on Council, Bill McKay will be the new mayor of Nanaimo.  McKay came out on top of a huge field of 10 candidates for the city’s top job.

McKay talked to Coast FM’s Hilary Eastmure right after the results were announced Saturday at the Shaw Auditorium.

There’s also going to be quite a bit of change-over on Council.  Incumbents Bill Bestwick, Jim Kipp and Diane Brennan are returning, and they’ll be joined by new faces Bill Yoachim, Wendy Pratt, Gord Fuller, Jerry Hong, and Ian Thorpe

The City of Nanaimo says voter turnout hit 34.7 per cent, an improvement over the 26.9 per cent of registered voters who cast ballots in 2011. The official results will be declared Wednesday at 2pm.
