Some Roosevelt Elk from the Sunshine Coast are settling into a new home.
The elk have been thriving in the areas north of Sechelt since being introduced to the Sunshine Coast, and now other parts of the province where they’ve become extinct are benefiting.
With the help of a local First Nation around two dozen elk were released near Harrison Lake last weekend. It’s the latest transfer in a program that’s been going on since 2000 and involves capturing elk that have been straying near homes or the highway.
Darryl Reynolds is a provincial wildlife biologist.  He says they prefer to leave the elk living deeper in the woods as they are.
He also says they’ll be closely watching how the Elk get on thanks to some high-tech hardware.
Reynolds says they don’t plan to relocate any more elk this winter, but they are hoping to send more down to join the others at Harrison Lake next winter. He also encourages people who know of elk in near populated areas, or near the highway to report it to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
