Sechelt moving to put Community Forest dividends into "legacy fund"

There’s been plenty of controversy over its logging operations, but there’s no doubt dividends from the Community Forest have proven a rich source of revenue for the District of Sechelt.

Now, the Council wants to put that money into a special “legacy fund” to support community projects.

Councillor Alice Lutes says it gets the District a lot closer to meeting the original vision for the Community Forest.

Mayor John Henderson says the fund arrangement would also give the Community Forest’s volunteer board a greater say in what happens with the money it generates.

The proposed terms for the fund say the District can’t use the money for its own routine operating or capital expenses, but they wouldn’t limit District’s ability to use profits from the Community Forest for special projects.  Last year Sechelt used 200-thousand dollars in Community Forest profits to kick-start the business development group Sechelt Innovations Limited
