Nanaimo RCMP investigating multiple vehicle thefts

Nanaimo RCMP have nabbed a prolific car thief. The 24-year-old is charged with stealing at least ten cars in Nanaimo during the month of December, but he wasn’t the only thief at work. Constable Gary O’Brien says 34 cars were stolen in the area last month, which is twelve more than the year before. So far in 2014, ten cars have been stolen.

O’Brien says the suspect in custody is responsible for the majority of the thefts last month.

They believe he was stealing cars in Nanaimo and then driving to other jurisdictions to commit other crimes. The suspect is also facing multiple charges in Parksville, Port Alberni and Saanich. He’s being released January 15th.

Meanwhile, O’Brien says other criminals are still are targeting vehicles in the area so it’s important to lock your doors. He says they’re actively investigating the issue and any suspicious activity should be reported to the RCMP immediately.
