A couple of Sunshine Coast residents were defrauded by phone scammers earlier this month, and police are advising people to be cautious.
A Halfmoon Bay resident lost $700 after taking a call from a man claiming to work for Telus, who said he could offer a free phone and discounted phone plan. It turned out to be a scam.
On February 8, a Gibsons resident reported $13,000 had been fraudulently taken from her bank line of credit, after a phone scammer pretended to be from the bank’s security department.
Police say to avoid getting scammed, don’t be afraid to say no, and don’t give out personal information. Do your research, and contact your bank or service directly if you aren’t sure if the caller is legitimate.
