A new bylaw on separating waste is being put into place by the Regional District of Nanaimo, but the district says in the first six months they will focus on education instead of enforcement.
The new Mandatory Waste Source Separation (MVSS) bylaw is currently in effect, and the district says it will require everyone in the area to adapt to new methods for various waste removal procedures.
“The bylaw requires commercial, multi-family and institutional properties throughout the RDN to have separate, partitioned waste containers for garbage, recycling and organics,” they say. “To help property owners and managers implement the new waste program, we’ll be focused on education rather than enforcement for six months.”
Many areas in the district already have similar bylaws in place for single-family residences, but they say the new MVSS applies to all properties across the district.
Properties impacted by the new bylaw include Island Health facilities, municipal facilities, hotels, restaurants, office buildings and condominiums/apartments.
