RCMP seeking more information following Nanoose Bay crash that killed one last week

A crash that killed one last Friday has RCMP looking for more witnesses to help them determine what happened.

The crash happened on January 3 just after 7:00 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 19 at Northwest Bay Road in Nanoose Bay, which resulted in the death of a 61-year-old pedestrian.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of the BC Highway Patrol said they are looking for more videos and witnesses to help them with their investigation.

“This is a dangerous time of year for pedestrians.  We are asking all drivers to slow down and be extra alert, and all pedestrians to wear high-visibility clothing and protect themselves.”

Mechanical and collision reconstruction experts have been brought in to assist in the investigation.

There is no indication the crash was due to impairment or with criminal intent and the driver remained at the scene and continues to cooperate with RCMP.

Multiple witnesses also stopped at the scene of the crash to aid the pedestrian until first responders arrived and assisted in the police investigation.

Anyone who has dash cam footage of the incident or who may have witnessed the events leading up to the collision is asked to call the BC Highway Patrol in Parksville at 250-954-2953.

No further updates will be provided until the investigation is complete.
