One man suffered minor injuries following Monday crash

One man suffered only minor injuries after his vehicle crashed into a Nanaimo hydro pole.

Nanaimo RCMP say the incident happened Monday night at 11:30 p.m., when the man’s vehicle veered off the roadway and hit a BC Hydro pole at the intersection of Morden Road and Aikenhead Road.

Along with police, Cranberry fire, Emergency health services, and BC Hydro attended the scene, finding the driver, who was in his early 60’s, out of the vehicle.

He was medically cleared by health services, with officers adding the man was under the influence of alcohol while driving.

“A breath demand was read, two breath samples were provided to which he failed,” said Nanaimo RCMP.

“He was issued with an Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) under the Motor Vehicle Act, then prohibited from driving for a period of 90 days. His vehicle was towed from the scene and a sober driver was arranged to pick him up.”

Reserve Constable Gary O’Brien says because of this incident, front-line emergency resources were tied up for an extended period of time, preventing them from answering any other calls for service.

If you believe a vehicle is being driven by someone who is impaired, they ask you to call 911 as soon as possible, and give them the license plate number, description of vehicle, and their most recent driving direction.
