Driver found impaired after originally calling RCMP to report a different suspected impaired driver

A driver trying to keep the streets safe from impaired drivers must have forgotten it included himself.

A 50-year-old Qualicum Beach motorist was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and had their vehicle impounded 30 days after failing a sobriety test after they called RCMP to alert them of a different suspected impaired driver.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on New Years Eve, when the suspected impaired driver pulled over near Fern and Berwick Roads and a second motorist stopped to prevent them from driving further.

Upon RCMP arrival, they detected the second driver was the one drinking from the smell on his breath, which resulted in a failed alcohol screening test.

Sgt. Shane Worth with the Oceanside RCMP said too many people still believe drinking and driving is an okay thing to do.

“Impaired driving is an offence; it is dangerous to everyone using the roads and our officers are targeting impaired drivers ever day of the year to take them off the street.”

Meanwhile the originally suspected impaired driver was confirmed to be sober and was having difficulty driving in the dark.

Three driving prohibitions and vehicle impoundments were issued on New Years Eve by Oceanside RCMP.

One was for a driver refusing an alcohol screening test and the other was for someone failing one following a single vehicle crash.
