Nanaimo council decided this week it will not hold a referendum in the near future on borrowing money to upgrade the city’s public works yard.
Instead, members of council directed staff to report back on options to complete the project.
The alternatives include a referendum on a new borrowing bylaw, or financing the project directly through property tax increases.
It was determined there is not enough time to set up and conduct a referendum under current provincial law and staff had recommended that council abandon the existing borrowing bylaw.
Nanaimo Council can still seek elector approval for a revised project with a new bylaw in the future.
The Alternative Approval Process to borrow up to $90-million for major updates to the works yard surpassed the 10 per cent threshold needed to reject the proposal.
