Starting this week, you can get free parking in parts of Downtown Nanaimo.
The City of Nanaimo says residents can now park on levels 2 and 3 of the Bastion Street Parkade for two hours at a time for free.
This change is part of a project to encourage new and returning shoppers to visit the downtown area and support local businesses.
City mayor Leonard Krog says this change comes just in time for holiday shopping.
“We hope this will continue to encourage residents and visitors alike to enjoy our downtown and support our downtown businesses,” said Krog.
They say before the Bastion parking, free parking was given in October for Commercial Street south of Wharf Street, Front Street, Chapel Street, Church Street, Bastion Street, Anchor Way and Cameron Road.
Parking at the Parkade is free for two hours between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, with parking on all levels to be free on evenings and weekends without a time limit.
