SCRD launches king tide photo contest for flood project

You can win a prize for a photo of one of the king tides expected to affect the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District is running a king tide photo contest to support a new project launched this week.

The coastal flood mapping project focuses on better understanding current and future flood hazards on the Sunshine Coast, with the district warning that flooding has become a growing problem for communities.

“Many residents will have experienced these hazards, with waves overtopping sections of the Sunshine Coast highway and ocean debris making its way onto beach accesses during major storm events,” said the district.

Sustainable Development Manager Raphael Shay says the project will update flood hazard mapping with different scenarios to better prepare for them in the future.

To assist the project, the District wants photos from you of the king tides on December 16, December 17, January 14, and January 15.

They hope through these can contribute to data that will not only support communities, planners and governments, but also bring insight on the issue.

The contest runs until January 24 next year, with four prizes of emergency kits or headlamps being awarded.

You can find the contest here.
