Staffing issues are continuing to keep recreation facilities closed across the Sunshine Coast Regional District, and they say so far, they can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel.
According to the district, since the COVID pandemic. municipalities across the country have had to deal with staffing shortages, particularly around public pools.
“Local governments have experienced a shortage of lifeguards as many either didn’t renew their certification or moved to other careers while facility closures were in place,” they say.
Two years ago, the district says a massive hiring campaign was started to draw more people into the field, with little success, and now the impacts are being felt.
“Recent vacancies have been hard to fill, and have resulted in further service impacts,” they say.
The district says until they have enough lifeguards to fill vacancies, the facilities will continue to be closed but they’ll continue to provide updates on any changes to operating hours as they occur.
