Chinese state hackers are Canada’s biggest cybersecurity threat: report

The largest Internet-based threat to Canada today is the Chinese government’s “expansive and aggressive” cyber program, says Canada’s Communications Security Establishment.

CSIS is Canada’s information security agency. In the latest report from its Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, it says China’s tradecraft and ambitions in cyberspace are “second to none.”

They say Canada’s state adversaries are disrupting computer networks and conducting online information campaigns to divide our society.

Russian state-sponsored hackers are also a threat to Canada, while Iranian state-sponsored programs focus on harassing and repressing Iran’s opponents.

According to the report, ransomware attacks are the top cybercrime threat facing Canada’s critical infrastructure.
