Construction helping Island economy avoid BC-wide slump, for now

Thanks largely to construction projects, Vancouver Island’s latest employment numbers are looking better than the rest of BC.

An annual report published each fall by the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC shows that on Vancouver Island and the Coast, excluding Greater Victoria, the region added more than 12,000 workers since September last year.

Woody Hayes with the organization says Vancouver Island has yet to experience the deterioration of the labour market which has plagued BC as a whole. He says in construction alone, 6,500 workers were added in the last year, nearly a 46% increase over last year.

He says the growth is thanks to ongoing construction in the public sector as well as other major projects underway on the Island.

You can see the whole report at the CPABC’s website.
