A science expedition which visited both coasts of the Island has wrapped up.
The Sharing Science at Sea expedition aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Sir John Franklin visited Port Alberni, Gold River, and Penelakut Island recently, collecting data and also hosting school groups and interested community members.
Year-round, Coast Guard vessels on both of Canada’s coasts do research and collect data to help monitor, conserve and protect oceans, lakes and rivers. The scientific work they do helps inform decisions about safe navigation, fisheries management, climate change, sustainability and conservation.
The Sir John Franklin is based in Victoria, and focuses on fisheries research. It has four science labs and was built in BC in 2019.
