Former mayor Ruttan to be honoured by City of Nanaimo

A former city mayor is getting recognized for his work through a civic honour in Nanaimo.

The City of Nanaimo has announced former mayor and community leader John Ruttan is getting the Freedom of the City honour, an honour given to someone who has helped improve the city’s livability through their work.

They say Ruttan is being awarded for his 61 years of community service, where he worked in the tourism, commerce, and politics sectors.

His accomplishments include working with the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society for 53 years, serving as Commodore/Chair from 1984 to 1991, being part of the Nanaimo Harbour Commision, serving as Chair of the Nanaimo Port Authority, and even serving two terms as City mayor from 2008 to 2014.

They say his time as mayor saw big city growth, including the expansion of the Nanaimo Airport, promoting tourism, downtown development, and community safety.

Mayor Leonard Krog says Ruttan’s dedication to the city has left a big impact.

“His legacy is evident in the many community projects and initiatives he has supported, and he is a true example of the spirit of service,” said Krog.

“It is a great privilege to recognize his contributions with Freedom of the City.”

The City adds Ruttan will be given the honour at a special ceremony this fall, as part of a future council meeting.
