The City of Nanaimo will dedicate a tree in memory of a woman who went missing over 20 years ago.
According to the city, the tree is for Lisa Marie Young, who disappeared on June 30, 2002, and as of today is still missing.
Lisa’s mom, Marlene Joanne Young, fought to keep the memory of her daughter alive for the rest of her life, with family and friends saying they are continuing to fight for justice in her name.
They say the tree is also to honour all the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit People, with Mayor Leonard Krog saying they hope the tree will be meaningful for the families affected.
The dedication is set for this Friday at the north end of the Departure Bay waterfront walkway, starting at 10:30 a.m.
