The lack of snow so far this winter isn’t just a concern for area ski hills – it could have an impact down the road on the water supply.
In Nanaimo, Water Resources Manager Bill Sims says the city’s water comes mainly from snow melt and rain in the spring, but they have been doing things a little differently given the lack of precipitation.
Sunshine Coast Regional District, Infrastructure Services General Manager Bryan Shoji says they’re watching the levels in Chapman Lake, but although snowpack plays a role, the lack of snow isn’t a major concern for them. The SCRD’s reservoir relies mainly on spring rains and a five day downpour will usually bring the levels on Chapman Lake up.
