Nanaimo residents are encouraged to drop, cover and hold on as the city says they will conduct a test of the Voyant Alert emergency later this month.
Registered users will receive a test of the alert system on Oct. 17 around 10:15 a.m. either by text, email or a call to test the system and according to the city they’re making sure everyone knows it is just a test but treat it as an actual emergency.
Mayor Leonard Krog says the test is critical, not just to make sure the system works but also to make sure residents know what to do in the event of an actual emergency.
“Knowing what to do if and when an emergency strikes is critical,” Krog says. “While you are testing your emergency preparedness skills during the Great BC ShakeOUt, we will be testing the system that provides critical information to you during an emergency.
“I encourage all residents to sign up for Voyent Alert as part of your emergency preparation.”
Registration of the alert can be done by downloading the app on your smartphone, visiting the city’s website, or calling public works at 250-758-5222.
According to the city, the system already has over 14,000 subscribers and the number is growing.
The Voyent Alert app can help notify you in the event of an emergency, such as an earthquake, and also advise on what to do.
