3,880 kilograms of trash cleaned up by Sunshine Coast volunteers

Over 3,800 kilograms of dumped waste has been cleaned up on the Sunshine Coast.

According to the Sunshine Coast Regional District, the clean-up was part of this year’s Backroad Trash Bash, an annual event focused on cleaning up illegal dumpsites throughout the region.

They say for this year, 31 volunteers showed up to clean up trash at 30 sites from Halfmoon Bay to Roberts Creek, with a total of 3,880 kilograms of trash collected on September 21.

District manager of Solid Waste Services Marc Sole says the district is thrilled with the turn-out this year.

“It is events like this that help create cleaner, safer, healthier, and more vibrant communities for our residents and businesses,” said Stole.

They say the materials found in this clean-up included tires, electronic waste, furniture, appliances, metal, and household garbage. Some items like refrigerators, TVs, and microwaves can be recycled for free, while some of the tires can be given to local tire shops.

They say if you find an illegal dump site, report it to the Conservation Officer Service by calling 1-877-952-7277.
