A rather easy robbery has led to a Nanaimo couple planning to change following their mistake.
Between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Sunday, September 15, thieves entered a home by walking through the unlocked front door and taking many personal items.
Nanaimo RCMP Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said this has become a wakeup call for the family.
“They admitted that they had become somewhat complacent over the years as nothing had ever been stolen from their property, let along having items taken from their home.”
The door was left unlocked following the homeowner and his son arriving home shortly after 1 a.m. and they both went to bed a few minutes later.
The house on Farrar Road in Cedar awoke to numerous missing items from their kitchen as well as their vehicle from the driveway.
The vehicle is a 23-year-old grey BMW X5 and was used to steal items including a new set of golf clubs, a backpack, computer, keys, wallet, purse, and a small amount of cash.
The backpack was tracked to Parksville via an air tag but soon after stopped tracking.
Stolen credit cards were used to purchase gas at a nearby gas station around 2 a.m. and the owners have since cancelled the cards.
O’Brien said the family is making sure they go to bed with all their windows and doors locked and shut now.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP.
