BREAKING: Big quake rattles North Island, but no tsunami or damages

A significant earthquake was detected between Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii this afternoon.

According to the US Geological Survey, a 6.5 magnitude quake happened at 3:22 pm 275 kilometres northwest of Port McNeill, at a depth of 10 kilometres. It was reported felt as far south as La Quinta, California, and several people in Gold River and Port Hardy also reported they felt the quake.

It’s ranked as having an intensity of five on the scale used by USGS, which is moderate shaking, but with very light damage potential.

The US Tsunami Warning System reports there is no tsunami warning or advisory in place because of the quake. No damages are expected from the event.

The latest update from Earthquakes Canada shows that there were 4 other quakes at that location and a large aftershock.
