The Town of Gibsons will be entering the next phase to bring more rental homes for families, seniors and individuals as part of the BC Builds project.
According to the province, phase one was recently completed with 40 homes open in a four-storey building with a mix of studio, and one-to-three-bedroom sites ranging from $842 to $2,300 depending on the unit size.
They say the second phase has already begun to provide an additional 33 homes for people with middle incomes and MP Patrick Weiler says this is a positive step forward for those people who need affordable homes on the Sunshine Coast.
“This project is an important step in addressing the housing shortage we see on the Sunshine Coast, ensuring that everyone has access to a secure home in the community where they want to live,” Weiler says.
According to a media release, the second phase will also include a childcare centre with 43 spaces. They add 25 of those spaces will be for children 30 months to school age, and 18 before and after school spaces.
Gibsons mayor Silas White says Shaw Place is a key goal in their strategic plan and thanks to partners from all levels of government for providing housing that will help strengthen the community for everyone.
“We are deeply grateful to our partners from the province, the federal government, and the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society, whose collaboration has been vital in making this project a reality,” Silas says.
Construction is set to be complete in early 2026, and the project is part of a $19 billion housing investment by the BC government.
According to the province, since 2017 nearly 80,000 homes have been delivered or are underway, with 415 on the Sunshine Coast.
