Flu death in Nanaimo

Influenza has claimed the life of one person in Nanaimo. The Medical Health Officer for the mid-island, Dr. Paul Hasselback, has confirmed that an individual between the ages of 20 and 65 passed away from H1N1 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in late December. Hasselback says underlying health issues were also a factor.

Hasselback says they saw a 12% increase in flu shot utilization even before outbreaks were reported on Vancouver Island, and they’re still seeing demand increasing.

Sunshine Coast MHO Dr Paul Martiquet says they’ve had no flu deaths and there’s plenty of vaccines available for those who still haven’t received the flu shot.

Meanwhile, the Interior Health Authority says an Okanagan woman in her fifties died from H1N1, which is BC’s first flu death of 2014.
