Nanaimo Regional General Hospital to receive second urgent and primary care centre

Residents of Nanaimo and the surrounding area will soon have better access to healthcare.

A second urgent and primary care centre (UPCC) is set to open in Nanaimo in 2025, replacing the temporary clinic that opened on June 12, 2024.

Minister of Health Adrian Dix said the Provincial Government is taking action to ensure more people receive health care when and where they need it.

“We know that people in Nanaimo need access to timely urgent primary care and this new UPCC will do just that.”

The temporary clinic that opened is available by referral only for patients discharged from Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s emergency department with complex needs.

The clinic provides follow-up care on certain weekday evenings and virtual support on Mondays.

The UPCC will provide same-day care for people whose health concerns don’t require emergency department visits, such as those with cuts, sprains, fevers, and minor infections.

It is expected to support more than 50,000 patient visits annually.
