Nanaimo man faces drug charges following arrest

A Nanaimo man is facing drug charges following a recent arrest.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the incident happened in the area of Wesley Street in downtown Nanaimo on June 27, where on-patrol officers were alerted to a person suspected of trafficking in street-level drugs.

Officers located and arrested the person just after 2:00 p.m., where they found over 1,000 Canadian dollars, drug scales, a small amount of crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl, and half a kilogram of suspected cocaine.

Reserve constable Gary O’Brien says the area of the incident has been under pressure by criminals taking advantage of those struggling with drug addiction.

“As a result, crime has risen in the area,” said O’Brien.

“For this reason, our Bike Unit in conjunction with City of Nanaimo Community Safety Officers carry out daily patrols of the area.”

Police add the man was released from custody while the investigation continues. They plan on forwarding their findings to Crown Counsel.

They are considering charging the man with three counts of Possession for the purpose of trafficking.
