SCRD offers public hearing on protecting riparian and shorelines

The SCRD will be hosting a public hearing this month to allow for engagement on changing bylaws around the protection of riparian areas and shorelines to meet legislative requirements.

According to the district, two of the three proposed amendments will be focused on bringing SCRD bylaws into alignment with provincial legislation, regulations, and guidelines. The third, while not required for alignment, the district says is an opportunity to provide clarity to property owners and contractors to prevent encroachment into protected riparian areas.

SCRD staff say if property owners are planning to work in a riparian area, they should visit their webpage which highlights a detailed plan on what steps to take before developing or altering land within 30 metres of a watercourse or top of bank.

A public hearing is scheduled for Jun. 24 at 7 p.m. at the SCRD’s main building, or members of the public can join virtually.
