Delays in construction forces Katherine Lake to remain closed, SCRD

The SCRD says Katerine Lake Park will remain closed until July for road repairs after significant weather caused damage to the access road.

According to the district, heavy rainfall in February caused major damage to the park’s road which led to a sinkhole forming on the road. They add the road was closed immediately due to structural damage including an undersized and corroded culvert system.

The SCRD says so far contractors have been hired to complete surveys, hydrological work, and engineering designs for road repair, and reports are being generated for submission to the relevant authorities.

In an earlier media release, the district said all work must be approved by both federal and provincial authorities due to the fish bearing stream beneath the road.

For those with campground bookings, the district asks everyone to remain patient and the operator of Katherine Lake Campground will contact customers with bookings to cancel.

The SCRD hopes to provide another update in mid-June on whether further cancellations will be needed.
