Parents want busing option for Cedar students who choose Ladysmith

Busing is the latest flash-point in the debate over the future of schools in the Cedar area.

When Cedar Secondary closes students can choose either John Barsby or Ladysmith Secondary, but if they choose Ladysmith, School District 68 says they’ll have to make their own way there.

There will be buses from Cedar to Barsby.

Some Cedar parents, like Scott Kimler, feel those wanting to attend Ladysmith should get the same option.  He also says in some cases people’s hands are being forced.

SD 68 says they’ve made it clear all along they wouldn’t provide transportation to Ladysmith. However, Trustees have asked for a study on the cost and that report comes to the Board Wednesday night.

Steve Rae from the Save Cedar Schools coalition says the report includes numbers that are much higher than those quoted in SD68’s original plan. Rae says he hopes trustees take a hard look at the numbers before deciding.
