Nanaimo looking at bylaw allowing fines for people leaving pets in hot vehicles

Leaving your dog in a hot car in Nanaimo could soon come with a hefty fine.
Council has asked staff to look into creating a new bylaw after hearing from some animal lovers, including Leon Davis, Manager of the Nanaimo and District SPCA.
He says Nanaimo needs a bylaw with some teeth to prevent pets from being left in hot vehicles.
Davis will be now be working with city staff on the bylaw, including financial penalities for careless pet owners.  He says it’s also an opportunity to consider other animal welfare bylaws, around basic care.
Right now people only face penalties if a pet comes to harm.
